The CD72 antigen exists predominantly as an 86 kDa disulfide-linked homodimer. However, analysis under reducing conditions reveals a major glycoprotein band of 42 kDa and a minor band of 40 kDa. CD72 antigen is the ligand for CD5. This pan B cell marker occurs at the earliest stages of B cell differentiation, and is found on B cells in the peripheral blood. It is lost during the terminal differentiation to plasma cells. It is also present on epithelial cells and some tissue macrophages. J3.109 antibody was evaluated during the Fourth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
