The CD43 antigen is a 95-135 kDa heavily O-glycosylated and sialylated single chain membrane glycoprotein. It is also called leukosialin or sialophorin. It is expressed by platelets and by all leukocytes, weakly on resting B cells but highly after activation. It is also found on hematopoietic precursor cells. DFT1 antibody reacts with an extracellular epitope of the CD43 antigen. It is useful for detecting leukocytes by flow cytometry and by immunohistochemistry, on routinely-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue sections. DFT1 antibody is also able to induce homotypic adhesion of leukocytes. It may also be used in Western blot. It was evaluated during the Fifth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
