The CD11a antigen, Leukocyte Function Associated molecule-1 (LFA-1), is the 180 kDa integrin aL-chain, non-covalently associated with the 95 kDa CD18 antigen (integrin b2). It promotes homotypic adhesion between lymphoid cells and heterotypic adhesion of lymphoid cells to the vascular endothelium. LFA-1 can interact with different ligands; the InterCellular Adhesion Molecules (ICAM): ICAM-1 (CD54), ICAM-2 (CD102) and ICAM-3 (CD50). CD11a antibodies react strongly with all leukocytes but do not recognize platelets. They react with peripheral blood T and B cells and with a portion of monocytes and granulocytes. They also stain thymocytes presents in bone marrow. 25.3 is a blocking antibody. It was evaluated during the Third International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
