The CD29 (4B4) antigen is the integrin b1 chain which is expressed as a heterodimer noncovalently associated with the integrin a subunits: 1 to 6 (CD49a to CD49f) known as Very Late Antigens (VLA). It is also called platelet GPIIa. It has been reported to be the receptor of fibronectin. The antigen mediates cellular adhesion. This glycoprotein complex has a molecular weight of 130 kDa. It has broad cellular reactivity but is not expressed by erythrocytes. In normal peripheral blood it is found on a subset of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes and on a minority of B cells. The inducer/helper subpopulations of CD4+ lymphocytes coexpress CD4 and CD29. The 4B4 antibody was characterized during the Third International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
