The CD8 (T8) antigen is a disulfide-linked dimer. The molecular weight of each monomer is about 32-34 kDa. The CD8 molecule is found on a T cell subset of human peripheral blood lymphocytes called "cytotoxic / suppressor" cells. A subset of Natural Killer cells expresses the CD8 antigen but with low to medium density expression. It is also present on most thymocytes where it is frequently co-expressed with CD4 and on a subpopulation of bone marrow cells. The CD8 molecule acts with the T Cell Receptor as a co-receptor for MHC class I molecule in antigen recognition. This antibody recognizes the a chain of the CD8 molecule. T8 antibody was characterized during the First International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
