In my experience, a leukopheresis procedure is primarily performed for
patients with CML. I've seen a few patients with CLL but never any with an
Acute Leukemia. We have routinely collected 1x10e12 cells for researchers.
The collected product is considered an anatomical discard. I'd also
suggest that all precautions with regard to exposure to biohazards be taken
with any pheresis product. You may want to check to see if any commercial
companies are performing leukophereses in your area as an alternative
source of cells. Therapeutic apheresis is a field that is becoming
increasingly privatized.
