We not infrequently observe endoduplication (that is, a tetraploid component
appearing) in cells cultured as suspension cultures. It is important that
the person using the cells realises that they have changed. The lateration
can have a dramatic effect on the properties of the cells. For example, a
cell line which becomes apoptotic on withdrawal of a growth factor, did not
exhibit an apoptotic response in th epresence of tetraploid cells.

The change could be a result of stress if the cells are not being
cultured under optimal conditions.
