Dear collegues,
A couple of weeks ago I appealed to you to contact your Senators and
urge them to support the Hatfield amendment to restore NIH funding.
As most of you, perhaps, already heard, the effort of the scientific
lobby was succesful - the proposal to cut by 10% NIH funding has been
defeated in Congress. As the editorial note in Science states: "The
vote was applauded by a coalition that had mounted a fierce lobbying
campaign on its behalf. Sanity prevails..." (Science, 268, 1271,
1995). Clearly, we have won on that occasion. We should realize that
scientists can organize an effective lobbying action in support of
the biomedical programs and. We should exercise this option more
frequently. Increased support of biomedical resesearch not only
benefits scientists, but most importantly, brings benefit to society.
