Are you sure the researcher is really familiar with PCs?
In the PC environment the backslash "\" character is used as the
directory path separator, as in C:\FRED\BLOGGS\DATAFILE.001, so it
makes absolutely no sense to use it in a filename.

Apart from fiddle fingers, you have at least two separate problems.
I'm sure I can help, but I need a bit of clarification.
