The CD20 (B1) antigen is a membrane-embedded non-glycosylated phosphoprotein. Three isoforms (33-35 and 37 kDa) result from differential phosphorylation within the cytoplasmic domain. The CD20 molecule is present on all normal B cells from peripheral blood, lymph node, spleen, tonsil and bone marrow but is absent from plasma cells. It is expressed at very low density on a subset of peripheral blood T cells. All the monoclonal antibodies directed to the extracellular domain of the CD20 molecule are likely to bind closely related epitopes. B1 antibody was characterized during the First International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
