Optical filters

Geoff O. asks about optical filter properties and transmission
spectra. There is a technical tutorial in Cytometry, 9:277-280,
1988 titled "Practical Consideration for the Selection and Use
of Optical Filters in Flow Cytometry". This tutorial addresses
many of the concerns of optical filters and offers some suggestions
as to how to determine the performance of your individual filters.
Filters do have finite lifetimes and they do change their spectra
slowly as they age. Also, sidebands are just a fact of life when
you are dealing with multi-cavity filters so you need to be aware
of those wavelengths when designing multiple dye or multiple laser
protocols.
