Through in-depth research I have discovered the song by Pink Floyd that
so strongly called to my mind the Jethro Tull lyrics you paraphrased.
The song is called "Time" and is on the same album as "Money."
Here are the lyrics:
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day, you fritter and waste
the hours in an off-hand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown, waiting for someone
or something to show you the way.
So, does this seem to strike a similar chord in your, or anybody else's,
mind, or am I out in left field on this one?
