Usually the apoptotic cells will give a sub-diplolid peak in the
DNA histogram. This is due to extraction of low molecular weight DNA
fragments when the fixed cells are resuspended in PBS for staining. The
efficiency of extraction depends on the cell type and the buffer in which the cells
are resuspended.
There is a large literature on this topic. Search on apoptosis, flow
cytometry and DNA histogram.
