Aeons ago Liz Musgrove and I worked on the surface transferrin receptor
as a marker for G0 (J Cellular Physiology 1984;118:6-12). It kicks in a few
hours before S-phase in mitogen stimulated lymphocytes. The molecular
mechanism for this is now very well characterised, and is probably
needed for cell cycle compentence in mammalian cells generally. During
exponential growth the expression is clearly cell cycle phase related, but
because of a comparatively long half life expression persists in G1 cells.
Liz and I made direct conjugates of human transferrin and FITC to
measure receptor/ligand interactions. However, provided you are
prepared to spend money on antibodies you could use anti-CD71, which is
the immunophenotypers' name for transferrin receptor.
