We have 2 Coherent Innova 90-5 lasers, originally from a Coulter EPICS 753,
but now residing on a BD FACS Vantage. We've always used city water for
cooling, even though ours has quite a bit of rust. A pump is used to
increase the flow rate of cooling water, and a one-stage filter is used to
remove the majority of the rust. (I've noticed that finer rust particles
still get through, and have caused minor problems with the laser power supply's
flow sensor.) Since the lasers are about 8 years old, we've replaced a few
plasma tubes, but they were all past their life expectancy at the time of
replacement. That is, the rust does not appear to shorten the life of a
plasma tube.
The only problem we've had with water temperature was when the building
engineer left a window open in a room that our pipe passes through, during
last year's deep freeze. The resulting solid phase water would not flow
through the (busted) pipes. :)
