Optical is NOT dead. If you have a need to do long-term storage, it's one
of the few storage technologies available that's proven its reliability in
the field (NASA's JPL for instance is using CDR to store probe images).

Optical however, is not the best-suited technology for short-term or
immediate storage needs. Hardware such as ZIPs and EZ-Flyers have the
budgetary edge.
