Colloidal Gold staining and silver enhancement procedures are applicable to tissue sections or on blots using similar protocols as used with enzyme conjugated antibodies. Simple and quick incubations yield intense staining (increased sensitivity) due to the high electron density of the gold particles. Gold staining at the EM level may be further visualized to the LM level with silver enhancement. Gold has been shown to be "safe" , sensitive (<10pg protein detected on blot), permanent (after silver enhancement, no fading), high resolution ( low diffusion), easy to use and offering wide applicability (blotting, in-situ hybridization, bioassay, LM and EM tissue sections)
